decluttering case study: downsizing a family home
It started with a Google enquiry
When I received this enquiry through my website, a lovely couple in Warwickshire explained they were downsizing after 40 years in the same family home and needed help sorting through five storage units. They told me it felt overwhelming and they didn’t know where to start.
From our very first conversation, it was clear they needed gentle, practical decluttering support from someone who would work at their pace, respect their memories and help make clear decisions without any pressure.
Following a practical plan
We agreed a simple plan to work through each unit step by step. We sorted everything together at a pace that felt comfortable, taking time to check what still had a place in their next chapter and what could be recycled, donated, sold or rehomed.
Sustainability is as important to them as it is to me, so nothing has been rushed and nothing has been wasted.
Steady, manageable progress
Even with that steady approach, the progress was quicker than they expected. We completely cleared one unit in the first week, which gave them a lot of confidence about the rest of the project.
They’ve been really positive throughout and say the process now feels manageable rather than overwhelming.
What's next?
They’re well on their way with their downsizing and feeling much lighter for it. Before long, we'll finish the final storage unit. They'll have made a huge achievement and I'm pretty sure I'll have made some lifelong friends.
